Immaculate Heart Girls’ School, lying gracefully amidst the rolling hills of Nyakibale in Rukungiri District, is far more than an institution of learning. It is a living testimony that when vision meets dedication and faith walks hand in hand with discipline, excellence becomes inevitable. As the African proverb wisely reminds us, “However long the night, the dawn will surely break.” At Immaculate Heart, that dawn radiates through every learner moulded into a woman of purpose, integrity and service.
Sanitation and hygiene are not seasonal campaigns at Immaculate Heart; they are a treasured culture carefully woven into the daily lives of every student. The school firmly believes that a healthy mind flourishes in a healthy body. Cleanliness is not merely encouraged—it is the order of the day, the daily anthem and the song every daughter of Immaculate proudly sings. Once the call for cleanliness is sounded, every student answers without hesitation.
The school has established vibrant leadership structures that champion environmental conservation. The Miss Environment, Miss Health, Ministers in Charge of Health and Domestic Affairs, together with the Health Committee, work tirelessly to ensure that every corner of the school remains spotless. They remind everyone that cleanliness is next to godliness and that prevention is better than cure.
The moment one enters the school gate, the environment itself offers a warm embrace. The neatly trimmed compounds, flourishing flowers, evergreen trees and sparkling surroundings silently proclaim that order, beauty and discipline live here. Every classroom, dormitory, pathway and compound reflects the school’s commitment to excellence. Indeed, first impressions last forever.
To the daughters of Immaculate, every day is Earth Day. They faithfully protect Mother Earth by planting trees, conserving nature, disposing of waste responsibly and keeping every nook and cranny impeccably clean. It is therefore no surprise that visitors are welcomed by refreshing greenery, pure air and the gentle breeze that dances through the beautiful compounds.
As the saying goes, “Many hands make light work.” Every club proudly participates in maintaining this admirable culture. The Wildlife Club, LEO Club, UNESCO Club, Drama Club, Red Cross Society, SWAS, Teen Star, Young Christian Students (YCS), Girl Guides and Laudato Si’ Movement compete positively in sanitation, beautification and environmental conservation. Together, they have transformed cleanliness into a way of life.
Long before National Cleaning Day became a government programme, the students of Immaculate Heart had already embraced sanitation as their daily responsibility. Every morning begins with sweeping classrooms, cleaning dormitories, maintaining gardens and beautifying the school environment. Charity indeed begins at home.
The Queens led by example, proving that true leadership is demonstrated through service. Their willingness to work alongside fellow students inspired everyone to participate wholeheartedly.
When Uganda declared the last Saturday of every month as National Cleaning Day, an initiative similar in spirit to Rwanda’s celebrated Umuganda, Immaculate Heart Girls’ School gladly joined the national call.
The Headmistress, Sister Tumusiime Sabina, joyfully informed the students about the programme and encouraged them to participate wholeheartedly. She immediately entrusted the Queens, the Health Committee and the LEO Club with organising the launch.
The launch was colourful, orderly and inspiring. Every assignment was clearly explained, and every participant understood her responsibility. The girls carried beautifully designed placards, educational charts and powerful environmental messages that attracted admiration wherever they passed.
Filled with excitement and determination, the students assembled in disciplined lines before beginning their community cleaning campaign.
The Senior Woman Teacher Ms Nabaasa Praise thanked the students for always responding positively whenever the nation called upon responsible citizens to serve.
Their first stop was the nearby church where they swept compounds, removed litter and restored cleanliness to God’s house, demonstrating that caring for places of worship is itself an act of worship.
The campaign extended to the footpaths leading to Kashutamo Trading Centre. Every piece of litter disappeared as the girls transformed neglected areas into clean and welcoming surroundings.
Residents applauded the students for their exemplary spirit of service and civic responsibility.
Crossing to the opposite side of the road, the students continued cleaning road reserves and public spaces.
Addressing them, Sister Tumusiime Sabina expressed profound appreciation to the Government of Uganda for introducing National Cleaning Day.
She reminded the students that loving God is demonstrated by caring for His creation.
She affectionately described them as “Ladies of Substance” and concluded with these inspiring words:
“The habits you build today are the victories you shall celebrate tomorrow. Success always follows those who choose responsibility over convenience”
With smiles of satisfaction, the students assembled under the leadership of the LEO Club after successfully completing the community cleaning exercise.
By midday, the students triumphantly returned to school, having first transformed their own environment before extending their love to the surrounding community.As part of the school Philosophy, the Headmistress and fellow admistrators welcomed the students back and appreciated them for being responsible ladies.
The day’s activities concluded with another act of compassion. Under the Rotary Club umbrella, the students gathered foodstuffs, toiletries and financial contributions for patients at Nyakibale Hospital.
The Patron of the Rotary Club, Mr Abenaitwe Davis, commended the students for their generosity and reminded them that “The fragrance always remains in the hand that gives the rose.” He encouraged them never to tire of serving humanity because every act of kindness invites God’s blessings.
Thus, the daughters of Immaculate Heart Girls’ School demonstrated that environmental conservation, compassion and service are inseparable virtues. By cleaning their school, serving the community and reaching out to the sick, they once again proved that true education is measured not merely by academic excellence but by transformed lives and responsible citizenship.
